A bit about me
(My cat, Muffin)
My name is Heidi. I live in Somerset with my ancient dog and cat.
I have 15 years experience working with neurodivergent young people. I continuously study and follow autism, anxiety, ADHD, neurodivergent related research. However, my most important source of knowledge is the people I work with. A diagnosis does not define a person!
With each new person I engage with, I prioritise putting aside all I know about a diagnosis and curiously get to know that person for who they are. My approach is rooted in Carl Rogers’ methods of empathy, curiosity, acceptance and unconditional positive regard. I recognise the benefits of being flexible and engaging collaboratively with each person to suit their specific needs and goals. I promote that no single approach is suited to everyone.
A core interest of mine is exploring different communication styles. I noticed how some people reacted to Covid-19 lockdowns. Some people struggled immensely during the lockdowns and some people appreciated the time and space to step out of normal social demands. Many people were less anxious communicating online, which gave them a more approachable method for accessing support and connection to the outside world. My intention is to provide an opportunity for mentoring to still be available remotely.
